Today I was looking at t-shirt designs I kind of wish I had time to finish some of them but sadly I don’t and I’m going to miss this class a lot but maybe since I’m posting this I might be able to find the same pictures down the road and get to use them in a t-shirt design.

Subsurface Scattering

After:Screen Shot 2018-05-15 at 11.04.13 AM.png

Today I had to bring more life to the face by making the face look warmer and way more meticulous than it did before. The first thing I had to do was go to the skin folder and create a new Hue/ Saturation tab where I also had to hold down the alt button key and make the new saturation layer to where it could communicate with the layers beneath it. I then had to click the colorize checkbox and pick out a very orangish color because orange would bring warmth to the image. I then inverted the mask on the saturation layer and I then got a very soft brush because you don’t want hard edges and painted in where the sun would warm up on the boy’s face such as the tip and bridge of the nose a little on the chin especially the left hand ear on the boy’s face and even a little bit of the lips.

Specularity and roughness

Before:Screen Shot 2018-05-14 at 11.18.46 AM.png

After:Screen Shot 2018-05-14 at 11.10.10 AM.png

Today I wanted to give the image more specularity or make the work look a littler worn from the light and it also lightens the image in the process making it look a lot more professional. The first thing I had to do was go back and forth paying attention to what light looks like on certain object say for example sunlight has a different shining effect on wood as it does on metal. But I first selected the layer that I wanted to effect as in example say the castle and then I made it black and white with a levels adjustment and also making the lines look pretty dark in the levels adjustment. I then made a hue/saturation layer giving the selected layer being affected a yellowish tint due to the color of the wood so it didn’t look so out of place. Then your going to make it into a mask and then invert the mask to where your painting in the specularity/ lighting effect and just make long nice even streaks with the wood so it looks more natural. And the same kind of applies to the leather and the metal on the boy which was also lightened up but make sure to use a light tint of the same color almost so the blending looks nice and realistic.

Day one-hundred and forty-three

Today I got some t-shirt designs printed off onto a t-shirt and there is a front and a back design for it and it is overall one of my best/ favorite designs I have made all year and here is a couple pictures below showing what I printed off today.

I also tried to find a couple of cool heavy duty trucking slogans/logos but they’re kind of hard to come by or find or maybe I might be googling the wrong key words but this is the only cool looking image I could find.

Day one-hundred and forty-two

Before:Screen Shot 2018-05-10 at 10.56.35 AM.png

After:Screen Shot 2018-05-10 at 11.27.41 AM.png

Today I got my old trusty brush out and I lightly made some more outlines of where I wanted the flame/ horns on the letters and then I got them filled in but I think that doing too many of them is a little overboard and doesn’t make the main part of the shirt “Show no Mercy” seem not as special and cool looking because almost all the letters are horned so I’m kind of still debating if I’m going to keep the horns.

Day one-hundred and forty-one

Main light source and refined shadows

Before:Screen Shot 2018-05-09 at 10.58.25 AM.png

After:Screen Shot 2018-05-09 at 11.17.15 AM.png

Today I wanted to add a hard light source to the image to make it seem like the sun is beaming down on the castle and the little boy and also add some shadows to the image so you can almost point distinctly in the direction that the sun is pointing. The first thing I had to do was go into the flags folder and select the outline of the castle and the flags and I had to hover over the thumbnail hold the command button on Mac and click the thumbnail so it selected that whole affected layer I then went all the way to the top of the layers and I added a new layer over all of the others and I gave the image a cool blue color that covered the whole selected area where I had to change the cool blue hard cover to the multiply option to where it was pretty much transparent and not completely drowning out the colors behind the blue layer. and then I pressed the mask button and painted in where I wanted the sun to go or I would invert the mask and use my brush to paint in where I wanted the shadows to be like it was easier to paint the shadows in on the castle while it was way easier to paint in the sunlight onto the boy. And to set up the shadowing effects on the boy and not the castle was the exact same just a different layer selected.

Highlighting Techniques

Before:Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 11.01.55 AM.png

After:Screen Shot 2018-05-08 at 11.09.59 AM.png

You may not see much of a change but today I learned how to add highlights and really make parts of the image pop and stand out almost like its a real object in reality standing on the grass and a sun up in the sky lighting his face up. It was truly a simple skill to learn and you can easily do it by only a couple steps. The first thing I did in this image was I wanted to lighten up the face in key locations that stick out towards the sun or that would be brighter then say the crease between the cheeks and the nose. I then created a whole new layer with the skin folder chosen and I changed the layer name to “ao highlights” and I then held the alt key and made it correlate or communicate with the other layers in the skin folder I then got a soft brush with very low flow and due to the brush I selected I also had to turn down opacity so the highlight isn’t to strong and doesn’t look weird and incorrect or like there is a direct light source in the boy’s face. I then brushed over the spots that needed it such as I said earlier key locations tip of the nose the cheeks and the chin and a little above the eyebrows. I also had to highlight the rest of the boy’s shirt in the image but you have to remember to avoid highlighting any creases or already shadowed parts as it will look really weird and unnecessary. When every you are highlighting a certain part of the image such as the tannish color of the boys skin you always want to select the color and use you color palette to soften or dilute the color but not to completely white and that is the same with the red shirt because if u highlight it with a different color it will stand out and it can potentially change the look of the texture on the shirt throwing the viewer off.
